Formula Cards, Gauge & RAG Reports

What is Formula Cards, Gauge & RAG Reports

GG-Logo---40x40px.png The Issue Filter Formula and Advanced Issue Filter Formula gadgets are available either through this standalone app or as part of Great Gadgets for Jira, the complete bundle that provides a broader collection of dashboard gadgets in a single app.

Formula Cards, Gauge & RAG Reports is a Jira dashboard app that helps teams turn Jira data into meaningful KPIs, metrics, targets, scores, and status indicators.

Calculate work-item counts or aggregate numerical fields using SUM, AVG, MIN, MAX, and COUNT. Create single-value KPI cards, goal-oriented gauge charts, five-star ratings, RAG-style indicators, percentages, ratios, and custom metrics that combine data from multiple filters or JQL queries.

The app helps you answer questions such as:

  • How many open, completed, overdue, blocked, or breached work items do we have?

  • How much work is planned, completed, or remaining?

  • What percentage of the project or release has been completed?

  • How much of the available budget has been spent?

  • Is a KPI currently in a green, amber, or red range?

  • What is the team’s average Customer Satisfaction score?

  • What percentage of service requests breached their SLA?

Key features

Two complementary formula gadgets

The app includes two configurable Jira dashboard gadgets:

  • Issue Filter Formula Gadget: Calculates one metric from a saved filter or JQL query and displays it as a number, a color-coded number, a gauge chart, or a five-star rating.

  • Advanced Issue Filter Formula Gadget: Combines data from multiple filters or JQL queries to calculate and display up to nine custom metrics as individual formula cards or inline text.

Formula cards, gauge charts, RAG reports, and custom KPIs are different ways of configuring and presenting the results calculated by these two gadgets.

Basic calculations on Jira data

Calculate metrics using:

  • COUNT

  • SUM

  • AVG

  • MIN

  • MAX

Apply these calculations to work-item counts or numerical fields available in Jira, such as Story Points, Original Estimate, Remaining Estimate, Time Spent, Satisfaction, or other supported numerical custom fields.

Custom mathematical transformations

Apply an additional mathematical transformation to the result calculated by the Issue Filter Formula Gadget.

For example, you can convert time values stored in seconds into hours or transform a raw calculation into the unit required for your report.

Advanced formulas using multiple data sources

The Advanced Issue Filter Formula Gadget lets you define up to nine variables. Each variable can use a different saved filter or JQL query and can be calculated using COUNT, SUM, AVG, MIN, or MAX.

Combine these variables into up to nine mathematical formulas to create custom percentages, ratios, variances, progress indicators, and other business-specific KPIs.

Formula cards and KPI scorecards

Display multiple calculated values as individual cards in the same gadget.

Each card can have its own label, formula, decimal precision, unit, and color, allowing you to create a compact KPI scorecard for a project, team, release, service, or portfolio.

Gauge charts for tracking targets

Display a calculated value as a gauge chart with configurable limits and colors.

Gauge charts provide a quick way to understand how a metric compares with its target, acceptable range, capacity limit, or warning threshold.

They can be used for metrics such as:

  • Progress toward a delivery target

  • Budget consumption

  • SLA compliance

  • Backlog size

  • Open defect count

  • Customer Satisfaction

  • Capacity utilization

RAG reports and threshold-based colors

Create Red-Amber-Green reports by assigning colors to configurable value ranges.

The ranges and colors are configurable, so you can adapt the report to the meaning of each KPI. You are not limited to the standard red, amber, and green colors.

Five-star ratings

Display a calculated value on a five-star scale.

This presentation is especially useful for Customer Satisfaction metrics calculated from the Jira Service Management Satisfaction field.

Multiple Jira data sources

Create calculations using:

  • Jira saved filters

  • JQL queries

Filters and JQL queries can return work items from one project, multiple projects, one team, multiple teams, a release, a service, or any other scope that can be defined in Jira.

Cross-project and cross-team KPIs

Use multi-project filters or JQL queries to create consolidated metrics across several teams, projects, products, or services.

With the Advanced Issue Filter Formula Gadget, individual variables can represent different scopes and then be combined into one overall KPI.
