What is Velocity & Throughput Charts app?
Velocity & Throughput Charts is a Jira dashboard app that helps teams measure how much work they complete and understand how their delivery pace changes over time.
It helps teams analyze sprint velocity, throughput, rolling averages, delivery trends, sprint scope changes, completion rates, and delivery consistency.
Which gadgets are included in the Velocity & Throughput Charts app?
The app includes two configurable Jira dashboard gadgets:
-
Team Velocity Chart Gadget: Displays the work completed across current and previous Scrum sprints, together with average velocity and sprint scope metrics.
-
Kanban Velocity / Throughput Chart Gadget: Displays the work completed across configurable time intervals and calculates the team’s rolling average velocity or throughput.
What is the difference between the Team Velocity Chart and the Kanban Velocity / Throughput Chart?
The Team Velocity Chart is sprint-based. It uses the history of a Scrum board to compare initial scope, final scope, completed work, scope changes, and average velocity across sprints.
The Kanban Velocity / Throughput Chart is interval-based. It measures completed work during regular time intervals and does not require the team to work in sprints.
Use Team Velocity when you want to analyze Scrum sprint performance and scope stability. Use Kanban Velocity / Throughput when you want to measure delivery continuously or across custom periods.
What is the difference between velocity and throughput?
Velocity typically represents the estimated amount of work completed during a sprint or time interval, such as Story Points or estimated hours.
Throughput typically represents the number of work items completed during a selected period.
Both metrics describe delivery pace, but they use different units. The gadgets allow you to select the measurement that best matches your team’s planning and reporting practices.
Who is the Velocity & Throughput Charts app designed for?
The app is useful for Scrum and Kanban teams, Scrum Masters, Agile Coaches, Product Owners, Project Managers, Delivery Managers, Engineering Leads, DevOps teams, ITSM and support teams, RTEs, and PMOs.
It can be adapted to Scrum, Kanban, SAFe®, ITSM, continuous-flow processes, and custom Jira workflows.
Is a free trial available?
Yes. You can start a free 30-day trial from the app’s listing on the Atlassian Marketplace.
Do I need Jira administrator permissions to use the gadgets?
A Jira administrator is generally required to install the app.
After installation, users with permission to create or edit Jira dashboards can add and configure the gadgets. Users must also have permission to view the Jira work items, boards, projects, and filters used as data sources.
Do I need to know JQL?
No. You can configure the Team Velocity Chart using a Scrum board and the Kanban Velocity / Throughput Chart using an agile board or saved filter.
JQL is available for the Kanban Velocity / Throughput Chart when you need more precise control over the work items included in the calculation.
Which data sources can I use?
The available data sources depend on the gadget:
-
Team Velocity Chart: A Jira Scrum board
-
Kanban Velocity / Throughput Chart: A Jira agile board, saved filter, or JQL query
Make sure that saved filters are shared with everyone who needs to view the gadget.
Can I track work across multiple projects or teams?
Yes. With the Kanban Velocity / Throughput Chart, you can use a saved filter or JQL query that returns work items from multiple projects or teams.
The Team Velocity Chart uses one Scrum board as its data source. A Scrum board can be based on a saved filter that includes work items from multiple projects or teams. In this case, the gadget calculates velocity and scope metrics using the sprints and work items included in that board.
How is sprint velocity calculated?
The Team Velocity Chart determines how much work was completed during each sprint according to the selected measurement unit and definition of Done.
Average velocity is calculated using the completed work from the configured number of previous sprints. You can choose how many sprints are displayed and how many are included in the average calculation.
What is the difference between Initial Scope and Final Scope?
Initial Scope represents the amount of work in the sprint when the sprint started.
Final Scope represents the amount of work in the sprint at its end, after any work was added, removed, or re-estimated.
Comparing these values helps you understand how stable the sprint scope remained after the team made its initial commitment.
Can I include the active sprint in the velocity chart?
Yes. The Team Velocity Chart can include active sprints together with closed sprints.
Values for an active sprint are not final and may change as work is completed, added, removed, or re-estimated.
Can I include the current time interval in the throughput chart?
Yes. You can include the current incomplete interval in the Kanban Velocity / Throughput Chart.
Because the interval is still in progress, its completed value may be lower than the values for previous full intervals. Take this into account when interpreting the chart.
Can I view the work items behind the chart values?
Yes. Both gadgets can display a detailed data table containing the sprints or time intervals and the work items that contributed to the calculated values. The data can also be exported to CSV for additional analysis or reporting.
Are these gadgets also available in Great Gadgets?
Yes. The Team Velocity Chart and Kanban Velocity / Throughput Chart are also included in Great Gadgets for Jira, StonikByte’s complete Jira dashboard reporting suite.
Which app should I choose?
Choose Velocity & Throughput Charts when you need a focused solution for monitoring sprint velocity, throughput, scope changes, rolling averages, and delivery consistency.
Choose Great Gadgets for Jira when you also need burndown and burnup charts, velocity and throughput, cycle time and lead time, cumulative flow diagrams, time-in-status reports, pivot tables and charts, custom KPIs, release forecasts, worklog reports and other reporting capabilities in one app.
Do I need the standalone app if I already have Great Gadgets?
No. If Great Gadgets is already installed and licensed, you can use the Team Velocity Chart and Kanban Velocity / Throughput Chart gadgets included in that app.
Is Great Gadgets licensed separately?
Yes. Velocity & Throughput Charts and Great Gadgets for Jira are separate Atlassian Marketplace apps, each with its own installation and license.
