Cycle Time, Lead Time & Time in Status Charts is a Jira dashboard app that helps Scrum, Kanban, SAFe®, ITSM, DevOps, and other teams understand how long work takes, where time is being spent, and how predictable their delivery process is.
Measure cycle time, lead time, and the time spent in workflow statuses or board columns. Analyze delivery trends, identify unusually slow work items, visualize the distribution of completion times, monitor thresholds and percentiles, and find workflow stages where work consistently spends too long.
The app helps you answer questions such as:
-
How long does work take from start to completion?
-
How long do customers wait from request creation to delivery?
-
Is cycle time increasing, decreasing, or remaining stable?
-
Which work items took longer than expected?
-
What percentage of work items is completed within a specific time?
-
How are cycle or lead times distributed?
-
Which workflow statuses or board columns consume the most time?
-
Are work items exceeding an expected delivery-time threshold?
-
How consistent and predictable is the team’s delivery?
-
Where are the potential bottlenecks in the workflow?
Key features
Four complementary time perspectives
Use the four gadgets together to analyze workflow time from different perspectives:
-
Time in Status: Shows where time is spent across workflow statuses, status categories, or board columns.
-
Cycle Time Trend: Shows how average cycle time or lead time changes across reporting intervals.
-
Control Chart: Shows the duration of individual completed work items and helps identify unusually slow items and outliers.
-
Histogram Chart: Shows how cycle or lead times are distributed across configurable duration ranges.
Cycle time and lead time reporting
Measure standard flow metrics such as:
-
Cycle Time: The time from when work starts until it is completed.
-
Lead Time: The total time from when a request is created or enters the workflow until it is completed.
You can also calculate the duration between other workflow events or selected statuses to match your team’s process.
Configurable cycle boundaries
Define exactly when a cycle starts and ends.
Depending on the gadget, the cycle can start when a work item:
-
Is created
-
Enters Jira’s To Do status category
-
Enters Jira’s In Progress status category
-
Enters a selected workflow status
The cycle can end when a work item:
-
Enters Jira’s Done status category
-
Enters Jira’s In Progress status category
-
Enters a selected workflow status
-
Enters its current status
This flexibility allows you to measure cycle time, lead time, response time, resolution time, testing time, review time, or another workflow duration relevant to your team.
Time in status, category, or board column
Use the Time in Status gadget to calculate how long work items remained in:
-
Individual workflow statuses
-
Jira status categories
-
Columns of a selected agile board
Display either the total accumulated time or the average time spent in each workflow stage.
Time in Status breakdowns
Group Time in Status results by Jira fields such as:
-
Assignee
-
Project
-
Priority
-
Work item type
-
Other relevant Jira fields
This helps you compare workflow time across teams, projects, priorities, request types, or other reporting dimensions.
Cycle and lead time trends
The Cycle Time Trend Chart calculates average cycle or lead time for consecutive reporting intervals.
Add a linear or polynomial trendline to determine whether delivery time is increasing, decreasing, or fluctuating. You can also display the overall average calculated from a configurable number of recent intervals.
Individual work-item analysis
The Control Chart displays each completed work item as a point based on its cycle or lead time and completion date.
Use average, rolling-average, standard-deviation, percentile, and threshold lines to:
-
Identify unusually slow work items
-
Detect outliers
-
Monitor changes in delivery performance
-
Evaluate delivery consistency
-
Find work items that exceeded an expected time limit
Cycle and lead time distribution
The Histogram Chart groups completed work items into duration ranges, making it easier to understand the overall distribution of delivery times.
Configure equal ranges or use custom thresholds that match your team’s expectations. The chart helps you see how many work items were completed within the expected time and how many took longer.
Percentiles and thresholds
Add percentile lines to the Control Chart and Histogram Chart to understand the delivery time achieved by a selected percentage of work items.
For example, the 85th percentile indicates the time within which 85% of the analyzed work items completed their cycle.
You can also add a custom threshold and highlight work items that exceeded it. This can help teams monitor internal delivery targets or potential SLA risks.
Average, rolling average, and variability
Depending on the gadget, display:
-
Average cycle or lead time
-
Overall average across selected intervals
-
Rolling average
-
Standard deviation
-
Linear or polynomial trendlines
These indicators provide context for individual results and help determine whether delivery is becoming faster, slower, or less predictable.
Multiple-cycle handling
Configure how work items that pass through the start and end points more than once should be processed.
Depending on your reporting needs, you can:
-
Display all cycles
-
Display only the first cycle
-
Display only the last cycle
-
Treat the period from the first start to the last finish as one cycle
-
Calculate a single duration as the sum of all cycles
Flexible data sources
Create charts using:
-
A Jira agile board
-
A saved Jira filter
-
A JQL query
Saved filters and JQL queries can include work items from multiple projects or teams, allowing you to analyze a single team, service, project, release, or broader delivery process.
Configurable time calculations
Display results using the time unit that best matches your reporting needs.
-
Work Item Count
-
Story Points
-
Original Time Estimate
-
Remaining Time Estimate
-
Time Remaining and Time Spent
-
Other numerical custom fields
You can also exclude weekends from the calculations when you want the charts to reflect working days more closely.
Subtask support
Include subtasks when they represent work that should be analyzed separately.
This helps teams obtain a more detailed view when development, testing, review, or other activities are tracked as subtasks.
Multiple visualization options
The Time in Status gadget can display results as:
-
Bar chart
-
Column chart
-
Pie chart
-
Stacked bar chart
-
Stacked column chart
The remaining gadgets provide purpose-built trend, scatter plot, and histogram visualizations for analyzing time-based flow metrics.
Detailed supporting data
Display a data table containing the work items and calculations behind the charts.
Depending on the gadget, the table can appear on a separate tab or directly below the chart. The data table can also be exported to CSV for further analysis or reporting.
