WIP Run & WIP Aging Charts

What is WIP Run and WIP Aging Charts?

GG-Logo---40x40px.png The WIP Run Chart and WIP Aging Chart are available either through this standalone app or as part of Great Gadgets for Jira, the complete bundle that provides a broader collection of dashboard gadgets in a single app.

WIP Run & WIP Aging Charts is a Jira dashboard app that helps Scrum, Kanban, SAFe®, ITSM, and other teams monitor work in progress and maintain a stable and predictable workflow.

Track how long work items remain in their statuses or board columns, analyze how WIP changes over time, identify aging items and bottlenecks, monitor WIP limit breaches, and detect workload or capacity problems before they affect delivery.

The app helps you answer questions such as:

  • How much work is currently in progress?

  • How long has each work item remained in its current status or board column?

  • Which work items are taking longer than expected?

  • Is WIP increasing, decreasing or remaining stable?

  • Is the team staying within its WIP limits?

  • Where is work accumulating in the workflow?

  • Is the team taking on more work than it can complete?

Key features

Two complementary WIP perspectives

Use WIP Aging to inspect the age individual work items. Use WIP Run to understand how the overall volume of work in progress changes over time.

Multiple data sources

Create charts using data from:

  • Jira agile boards

  • Saved filters

  • JQL queries

  • Epics

  • Portfolio-level work items, such as initiatives or themes

This allows you to track WIP for a single team, multiple projects, a release, an epic or a broader delivery initiative.

Configurable WIP definition

Define which workflow statuses or board columns represent work in progress so that the calculations match your team’s workflow and working practices.

Flexible WIP measurement

Calculate WIP using:

  • Work item count

  • Story Points

  • Original Time Estimate

  • Other numerical custom fields available in Jira

Aging thresholds and percentiles

Add average, percentile or custom threshold lines to the WIP Aging Chart. Work items that exceed the configured threshold can be highlighted, making unusually old work easier to identify.

WIP limits and breach detection

Display minimum and maximum WIP limits in the WIP Run Chart and identify the intervals in which those limits were breached.

Display the total WIP and add a linear or polynomial trendline to determine whether work in progress is increasing or decreasing. You can also split WIP by a different fields to understand how work is distributed by status, work item type, assignee, priority, project or another relevant dimension.

Configurable calculations and display

Customize age calculations, time units, chart intervals, colors, labels, legends and other display options to match the reporting needs of your team.
